Watch Storage Tips for Collectors
Watch storage tips for collectors — the five enemies of stored watches, short/medium/long-term storage, and a quick checklist.
Watch Storage Tips for Collectors
A watch collection is an investment. Whether you have three watches or thirty, how you store them directly affects their longevity, accuracy, and appearance.
The Five Enemies of Stored Watches
- Moisture — causes rust, condensation, gasket degradation
- Magnetism — disrupts movement accuracy
- Sunlight — fades dials, discolours straps
- Dust — works into cases and movements
- Impact — scratches, dents, mechanical damage
Short-Term Storage (Daily)
- Use a watch stand or pillow
- Keep away from electronics (magnetism risk)
- Avoid direct sunlight
- Store dial-up to protect the crystal
Medium-Term Storage (Days to Weeks)
- Watch box with individual compartments
- Soft felt or velvet lining
- Individual pillows for straps
- Away from humidity (avoid bathrooms)
Long-Term Storage (Months+)
- Remove leather straps — they can transfer oils or leave impressions
- Let automatics stop — don't keep on a winder for months
- Store in a cool, dry place (15–22°C)
- Use silica gel packets in each compartment
- Check periodically for condensation or battery leakage
Storage by Watch Type
- Automatic: Winder for short-term, let stop for long-term
- Quartz: Remove battery if storing over a year
- Leather straps: Remove for long-term storage, store flat
- Dive watches: Test water resistance before/after extended storage
Quick Storage Checklist
- Individual compartments (no watches touching)
- Soft lining (felt/velvet)
- Away from direct sunlight and electronics
- Cool, dry environment
- Silica gel for long-term storage
- Leather straps removed for extended storage
