How to Fit a Cartier Tank Replacement Strap

How to fit a Cartier Tank replacement strap — 16mm lug width, alligator grain vs calf leather, colour guide, and step-by-step fitting instructions.

How to Fit a Cartier Tank Replacement Strap

The Cartier Tank is one of the most iconic watch designs ever created. Its rectangular case and geometric purity have made it a symbol of elegance since 1917. But fitting a new strap to a Tank requires a bit more knowledge than your average round watch.

The Cartier Tank Lug Width: 16mm

The most critical detail: the Cartier Tank uses a 16mm lug width. All straps in our Cartier Tank collection are designed for this exact measurement.

Two Strap Types: Alligator Grain vs Calf Leather

Italian Alligator Grain (WCART500–505)

Bold, textured, and traditional for the Tank. Available in black, brown, blue, green, red, and pink at £133.32.

Italian Calf Leather (WCART100–103)

Smoother, softer, and more understated. Available in black, blue, red, and pink at £121.65.

Which Colour Should You Choose?

  • Black — the safest, most versatile choice
  • Brown — warm, traditional, pairs with gold cases
  • Blue — sophisticated, works with silver and gold
  • Green — unexpected, increasingly popular
  • Red — bold, fashion-forward
  • Pink — soft, elegant

How to Fit the Strap

  1. Place the watch face down on a soft cloth
  2. Insert the spring bar tool between the strap and the lug
  3. Compress the spring bar and release from the lug notch
  4. Remove spring bars from the old strap
  5. Insert spring bars into the new strap
  6. Position the new strap (buckle end at 12 o'clock)
  7. Compress and seat each spring bar
  8. Gently tug to confirm both bars are seated

Tank-Specific Tips

  • The Tank's lugs are shorter and closer together than round watches — take extra care
  • The strap should sit perfectly flat against the lugs with no twisting
  • If the strap feels tight, check that the spring bar isn't trapped at an angle

When to Replace Your Tank Strap

  • Cracking or flaking leather
  • Discolouration from sweat and UV
  • Loose fit from stretched pin holes
  • Odour from absorbed sweat
  • Style refresh

A quality Italian leather strap should last 2–3 years with daily wear.
